What to Wear for Newborn Photos (A Simple Guide for Timeless, Beautiful Images)

If you’re preparing for a newborn photography session in Columbus, Ohio, one of the most common questions is: what should we wear?

The good news is—your clothing choices don’t need to be complicated. The best outfits for newborn photos are simple, comfortable, and timeless, so your baby remains the focus of every image.

At Jacqueline Marie Photography, I help families create natural, soft, and emotion-filled newborn portraits that will never go out of style.

The #1 Rule: Keep It Simple

When choosing outfits for newborn photos, less is always more.

The goal is to keep attention on:

  • Your baby’s tiny features

  • Connection between family members

  • Natural emotion and softness

-Avoid anything that distracts from your baby, such as loud patterns or heavy logos.

What Baby Should Wear

For newborn sessions, babies are typically photographed in:

  • Soft swaddles

  • Neutral wraps

  • Simple onesies

  • Or completely natural (no clothing)

Neutral tones like:

  • white

  • cream

  • beige

  • soft gray

work beautifully for newborn photography in Columbus, Ohio because they keep the focus on your baby’s skin tones and expressions.

What Mom Should Wear

For moms, the most flattering and timeless options are:

Soft, neutral dresses

  • Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully

  • Solid colors keep attention on your baby

  • Avoid tight or heavily structured clothing

Earth tones and soft neutrals

  • Cream

  • Taupe

  • Soft blush

  • Warm beige

Comfort is key

Newborn sessions are relaxed and baby-led, so comfort matters just as much as style.

What Dad Should Wear

For dads, simple and clean outfits work best:

  • Solid neutral t-shirts or henleys

  • Button-down shirts (light colors work best)

  • Avoid logos, bold patterns, or neon colors

Stick to:

  • white

  • gray

  • navy

  • earth tones

What Siblings Should Wear

If siblings are included in your newborn session:

  • Keep colors neutral and coordinated (not matching exactly)

  • Avoid busy prints or cartoon characters

  • Soft textures like knits or cotton photograph well

The goal is harmony, not matching outfits.

Best Colors for Newborn Photography

For timeless newborn photos in Columbus, Ohio, the most flattering color palette includes:

  • Soft white

  • Cream

  • Beige

  • Muted earth tones

  • Soft pastels (very light blush, sage, dusty blue)

These colors help create a soft, cohesive gallery that won’t feel dated over time.

What to Avoid Wearing

To keep your newborn photos clean and timeless, try to avoid:

  • Neon or bright colors

  • Busy patterns or large prints

  • Heavy branding or logos

  • Matching outfits that feel overly “posed”

  • Distracting jewelry or accessories

Why Outfit Choice Matters

Your clothing plays a subtle but important role in newborn photography.

The right wardrobe:

  • Keeps focus on your baby

  • Creates a cohesive gallery

  • Enhances emotion and connection

  • Ensures your images stay timeless for years

That’s especially important for families booking newborn photography in Columbus, Ohio who want images they’ll still love decades from now.

One of the benefits of working with Jacqueline Marie Photography is that you don’t have to figure this out alone.

I guide every family through:

Newborn Photography in Columbus, Ohio | When Should You Book Your Session?

When to Book Your Newborn Photographer in Columbus, Ohio

Expecting a baby is one of the most exciting seasons in life, and many families begin planning how they want to remember those first precious days. One of the most common questions parents ask is, When should we book our newborn photographer?

If you’re searching for a newborn photographer in the Columbus area, the best time to reserve your session is actually during your pregnancy. This gives you time to find the perfect fit for your family.

Some details to consider when choosing a newborn photograher in Columbus, Ohio.

  1. What experience does the photographer have?

  2. Does the photographer have a professional studio that I will be taking my baby to?

  3. Does the photographer have an extensive portfolio I love?

  4. What is the process for choosing and selecting my images? What kind of editing is done?

As a maternity, newborn, and baby photographer serving families in Columbus, and all of central Ohio including New Albany, Worthington, Dublin, and Upper Arlington , I recommend booking your newborn session in your second trimester to ensure availability around your due date.

Why Booking Early Matters

Newborn photographers typically take a limited number of sessions each month to allow flexibility for babies who arrive earlier or later than expected. Because of this, calendars can fill up quickly. I limit the amount of sessions I schedule each month to ensure every family received a full luxury experience.

When you reserve your newborn photography session ahead of time, we will place your due date on the calendar for availability. Once your baby arrives, the exact session date will be scheduled within the ideal timeframe. Planning ahead also gives parents time to prepare for the session and ask questions about what to expect.

What’s the ideal time frame?

Newborn photography sessions in my Columbus Ohio studio are usually scheduled when babies are between 2-3 weeks of life. During this stage, babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those adorable newborn poses. This is the time when photographers can safely capture those tiny details parents love most—little fingers, delicate eyelashes, and peaceful sleepy expressions.

After the three week mark, babies become more alert and active, which can make traditional posed newborn photography more challenging. While beautiful images can still be captured later, the early days allow for the classic newborn style many parents love.

Creating a Relaxed Experience for New Parents

Preparing for a newborn photography session can feel overwhelming when you’re adjusting to life with a new baby. That’s why creating a calm, comfortable experience for families is such an important part of what I offer.

My newborn sessions are baby-led, meaning we follow your baby’s natural rhythm with plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and cuddling. Patience and safety are always the top priorities during every session.

One of the things that makes the experience even more special for many of my clients is the support of my professional hair and makeup artist team. They help moms feel confident and pampered before maternity sessions so they can fully enjoy the experience and feel beautiful in front of the camera.

Serving Families in the Columbus Area

Happy 7th Birthday Adelynn | American Girl Doll Birthday Party | Columbus Ohio Photographer

American Girl Dream Birthday Party

My sweet little girl turned 7 last weekend! I don’t know where the time has gone. They just grow up incredibly too fast! I’ve always loved designing and planning birthday parties for my children, and this one was so much fun!

She has always loved dolls. As she’s gotten older she’s obsessed with all things American Girl. As we planned her party this year, we decided to plan an American Girl at home party so she could include more of her friends. I spent a lot of time planning details, crafts, food, and everything I could think of to bring her vision to life! I tried to photograph as much as I could, while still enjoying the party. I hope this helps anyone planning an American Girl party for their child!

For colors, I planned everything around the American Girl colors and logo. Lots of red and pinks! I lucked out her party was right after Valentines Day when shopping for these colors.

*The sequin table runners and pink chair bows are from amazon!

*The star balloons are from Dollar Tree.

*The Happy Birthday Banner is a little DIY from Dollar Tree. I bought the pink one and white one, and just alternated the colors. The hot pink flowers are also from Dollar Tree. It was a tissue paper garland that I cut to use.

*The light up “AG” letters are Amazon.

*Balloon Garland is from Party City.

*Flower centerpieces are silk flowers from Hobby Lobby. The pink bucket/vase was Dollar Tree.

We wanted each girl to have a matching outfit for their doll to be able to take home. The t-shirts are from AliExpress, along with the sparkle shoes. The t-shirt glitter letter is the first name of each girl. Those were purchased on Amazon. The pink felt flowers I found at a local thrift store (of all places!). The tutu skirts are DIY with tulle from Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby, all tired to a hair tie.

The party hats are also DIY. I bought a digital paper file on ETSY for the pattern, found a free template online for the hat, bought elastic at Hobby Lobby and the pink pom on top. A little hot glue made them come to life!

The cake table was designed to include her dolls. The gold stars are from Joann Fabrics Christmas decor years ago! I actually used them for her First Birthday (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star theme).

The cupcakes were made from a local baker and were delicious! The sandwiches with stars were made using a cookie cutter from the cake section at Hobby Lobby.

For activities we planned:

*Bracelet making. The girls made matching bracelets for them and their dolls. Purchased on Etsy.

*Doll birthday candle making. These were large tea-lights I got at Hobby Lobby. They decorated with washi tape, jewels and stickers.

The next big activity was the life size doll box! Each girl got their photo in the doll box! This was quite the project and cost more money than I want to admit haha!

The box is a wardrobe box purchased at U-HAUL. The images were from Etsy and I printed at the local UPS store. The girls loved it!!!

Everything came together perfectly and we had a blast!
